Passkey technology results from a joint effort by some of the giant tech companies such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Fido Alliance – that aim for a passwordless future. Passkey allows users to open or use services without the need to use a password or username. Instead, users use a PIN, fingerprint, or face scan to gain access to a website or an app.

The passkey technology is based on public key cryptography. This eliminates phishing and other cyber attacks making your account more secure.

To sign into a website or app using Passkey, your device (most commonly a smartphone) should be near you. The reason for this is that you need to scan a QR code from the device before you can have access.

Here’s how Passkey works when you open your account:

  1. When you create a passkey for your account, your device will generate two types of keys: public key and private key.
  2. The public key is sent to the web server for storage. The private key, on the other hand, stays on your device and should be kept secret.
  3. When you try to sign in to a website or app, your device will send the public key.
  4. The website or app then, will then send a challenge to prove that the real user is logging in to the account.
  5. Your device uses the private key to solve this challenge. If the decryption is successful, the website or app knows that you are the legitimate user.
