Twitter rebrands as X

For over a decade, the iconic blue bird has served as Twitter’s emblem. However, this familiar logo may disappear from our screen as Twitter officially rebranded as “X”.

Following the controversial paid subscription scheme, Musk is once again grabbing headlines after his rebranding announcement on Twitter last July 24, 2023. The giant social media platform replaced its bird logo with an X.

Apart from the new Twitter logo, Musk also surprised the online community by introducing the new domain X.com,  In a tweet, Musk shared that X.com now points to Twitter.com.

According to Linda Yaccarino, the new CEO of Twitter, X will focus on “audio, video, messaging, payments/banking.”

“It’s an exceptionally rare thing – in life or in business – that you get a second chance to make another big impression. Twitter made one massive impression and changed the way we communicate. Now, X will go further, transforming the global town square,” Yaccario shared in a post.

While the branding update can now be observed Twitter website, the app version did not appear to change as of this writing. The Twitter branding page also has yet to be updated.

The Twitter rebranding to “X” represents the most recent notable change following Musk’s acquisition of the giant social media platform last year.

Reason for Twitter Rebranding

Elon Musk post regarding Twitter rebranding

A day after the radical announcement on July 25, 2023, Musk explained why he decided to rebrand Twitter to X, through a Twitter post. According to Musk, it is more than just a name change, it represents his plan to build an “everything app.”

Musk said in his tweet:

“Twitter was acquired by X Corp both to ensure freedom of speech and as an accelerant for X, the Everything app. This is not simply a company renaming itself, but doing the same thing.”

Musk also unveiled his plan to provide means to manage users’ entire financial world.

“The Twitter name made sense when it was just 140-character messages going back and forth – like birds tweeting – but now you can post almost anything, including several hours of video. In the months to come, we will add comprehensive communications and the ability to conduct your entire financial world. The Twitter name does not make sense in that context, so we must bid adieu to the bird.” Musk shared in a post.

It can be recalled that this explanation remains consistent with his tweet from October 2022. In the said post, Musk also emphasized buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating an “everything app”.

New Twitter Domain

The new domain X.com is now directing users to Twitter’s home page. It can be remembered that Musk bought the domain X.com from Paypal way back in 2017.

The previous domain Twitter.com remains live, as of this writing.

A Move to Deal With Negative Cash Flow?

The recent Twitter rebranding is currently facing challenges. Just recently, Musk disclosed that the company is experiencing a negative cash flow. This is even after Musk claimed last March that most who’d fled the site had returned.

Musk identified two reasons for the company’s red cash flow: first, a significant drop of nearly 50% in advertising revenue, and second a heavy debt load of the company.
